Regenerate Thumbnails(...) is one of a few plugins that you can use to rebuild the different sized images (thumbnail, medium and large) when you update Media settings.
Bobbing Wide have used this plugin on a number of different sites. It’s not normally needed, and can be deactivated when the thumbnails have been rebuilt.
