The WordPress eCommerce plugin is a Lite version of a premium plugin from MarketPress.
I’m rather put off by this. It won’t do everything I need it to do so I’ll have to upgrade to the full version and have to spend money. It could be worthwhile.

I tried it on www.twenty-tenners.co.uk

Shop at 20 tenners

Installation

Initially easy to install the basic plugin, but then it suggested I install one of their plugins at

http://premium.wpmudev.org/wpmu-dev/update-notifications-plugin-information/

I held out for a while as obtaining the plugin required me to sign up.
Then when I installed the plugin I got a giant banner… that needed dismissing… but it will appear again in a month’s time.
Then it went on about my free API key.
A bit too IN YOUR FACE for me.

Configuration

Again, fairly easy… but the Payment options on the Lite version are limited. I could only choose Manual Payments and PayPal Express Checkout.

Comments

I was using the out of the box Twenty Ten theme. I had at least three problems:

  1. Order status display was all wrong. It appeared to be repeated and incorrectly positioned… as if the shortcode had been programmed incorrectly.
  2. Using the Manual payment method produced a message saying “Whoops, looks like you skipped a step! Please go back and try again.”
  3. Clicking on the store status link displayed more “rubbish” as in 1. and a Contact us link pointing to http://mysite.com/contact

Conclusion

Try another one.
